The translator has rightly chosen some of the well-known poems of Bharathi. She has also given useful introduction and a list of significant events in the poet's life. The translator has recaptured the spirit and tone as well as recreated the content of the poems. Robert Frost once said that poetry is what is lost in translation. But I have always felt that good translation can recover the poetry by discovering a deeper third language embracing both. The present translation of Bharathi is both beautiful and faithful. The waves of the sea that come and go trying to share their secrets in the shore are also like translators as they enact the dance of meaning in the silence of truth.
